Today, topics such as work-life balance and labor shortages in logistics, construction, and manufacturing are frequently discussed. To address workforce challenges, many companies have relied on overtime, part-time workers, or temporary labor.
At the same time, rising labor costs and increasing energy prices are putting greater pressure on business profitability. In this environment, improving productivity has become essential, driving a growing demand for automation across industries.
In this article, Temas introduces the Utility Slide, a heavy-duty slide rail designed for high-load applications and widely used in automation systems, particularly within the logistics sector.
Utility Slides in Logistics Applications
Most people have ordered products through e-commerce platforms or large retail networks. Today, placing an order and receiving it within a few days has become an everyday expectation.
However, achieving such delivery speeds would require an enormous workforce if every warehouse picking operation were performed manually.
In automated warehouses, when an order is received, autonomous shuttles or carts travel to the storage location, retrieve the required products, and transport them to the packing area. This significantly reduces the workload of warehouse personnel while allowing businesses to optimize labor resources.
Automation has become indispensable for maintaining the convenience and efficiency that modern society enjoys. In these automated storage systems, THK's Utility Slide Model ATG is used in shuttle extraction mechanisms to pull storage containers out of warehouse racks.
What Is a Utility Slide?
A Utility Slide is a type of slide rail designed to deliver high load capacity and exceptional durability.
THK's Utility Slide Model ATG consists of an outer rail, an inner rail, rolling balls, and ball retainers. The product is manufactured from high-carbon steel and lubricated with AFT-LF lithium-based grease, developed using THK's core Linear Motion Guide technology.
The ATG is a telescopic slide rail that extends and retracts through the movement of its inner and outer rails. Equipped with two rows of rolling balls, it provides high load capacity, excellent durability, and stable operation. It is also easier to install than many other linear motion mechanisms.
Key Features of the Utility Slide
The ATG Model offers three major advantages:
1. Higher Load Capacity and Longer Service Life
Compared with conventional slide rails, the ATG Model uses high-carbon steel for its inner rail. In addition, the raceways are induction-hardened to increase surface hardness.
As a result, the ATG can achieve load capacities up to ten times greater than slide rails manufactured from standard sheet steel. This combination delivers superior durability, higher load ratings, and significantly extended service life.
2. Easy Installation
In automated warehouse shuttle systems, linear motion components are often mounted directly onto aluminum frames or surfaces that are not machined to high precision. Therefore, the ability to absorb installation errors is a critical requirement.
To address this challenge, the ATG Model utilizes arc-shaped raceways with a two-point contact structure. This design allows the balls to automatically adjust their contact positions within the raceway, helping absorb mounting surface deviations.
Thanks to this error-compensating capability, installation becomes much simpler and does not necessarily require continuous supervision by highly specialized engineers. This reduces installation time, lowers on-site workload, and contributes to higher operational efficiency in logistics facilities.
3. Reduced Risk of End-of-Stroke Jamming
Conventional slide rails typically use Gothic-arch raceways. In contrast, the ATG Model features arc-shaped raceways that reduce differential sliding between the balls.
Because the rolling balls contact only the deepest point of the raceway, ball skewing is also significantly minimized. As a result, the risk of end-of-stroke jamming caused by ball misalignment is greatly reduced, ensuring stable and reliable operation over extended periods.
Other Applications
In addition to automated storage systems, the Utility Slide Model ATG can be used in a wide range of applications, including:
- Railway car door guide rails
- Machine tool door guide rails
- Seat sliding mechanisms
- Battery maintenance door pull-out systems
- Retractable train steps
- Guide rails for workpiece and component storage systems
A common characteristic of these applications is that the mounting surfaces often do not meet highly precise machining standards.
Thanks to its ability to absorb installation errors, the ATG Model reduces the need for additional machining, shortens installation time, and helps optimize overall investment costs.
