Customer Background & Requirements
Dassault Aviation is a global leader in aircraft design and manufacturing, operating an extensive worldwide network. To ensure seamless maintenance operations and spare parts supply, the company manages large-scale distribution centers that store over 300,000 different part numbers.
In the aerospace industry, delivering the right part at the right time—with near-perfect accuracy—is not optional, but essential. This creates a critical need for a warehouse system capable of fast processing, minimal errors, and effective inventory control.
Challenges
Prior to optimization, Dassault’s warehouse relied on traditional storage methods, which led to several operational limitations:
- High picking error rates due to the vast number of SKUs and reliance on manual handling
- Time-consuming part retrieval, directly impacting delivery lead times
- Inefficient use of storage space, especially for small but high-volume components
- Difficulty maintaining consistency and efficiency across global order fulfillment
These challenges not only reduced operational efficiency but also introduced risks into the aerospace supply chain.
Solution
To address these issues, Dassault deployed the Modula Lift. This solution fundamentally transformed warehouse operations by shifting from a “person-to-goods” model to a “goods-to-person” approach.
By utilizing vertical space, the system significantly increases storage density without expanding floor area. At the same time, all retrieval operations are managed through software, enabling operators to access the correct item with just a few simple actions.
Each Modula unit can store up to 20,000 SKUs, making it particularly well-suited for environments with a high number of part references and strict inventory control requirements, such as aerospace.
Achieved
Following the implementation of the Modula system, Dassault realized substantial improvements:
- Near elimination of picking errors, ensuring high order accuracy
- Faster retrieval and order processing, improving delivery speed
- Increased warehouse productivity while reducing operator workload
- Optimized storage space, resulting in a more organized and efficient facility
- Enhanced traceability and inventory control across the entire system
The system features a storage depth of 857 mm and a width of 3100 mm
Adopting Modula automated storage has not only helped Dassault solve its immediate operational challenges but also established a strong foundation for a modern logistics system capable of meeting the stringent demands of the aerospace industry.
